About the Sleep School

The School of Clinical Polysomnography was established in 1996, in affiliation with the Rogue Valley Sleep Center, Medford, Oregon. Our mission is to is to provide high caliber training and education to physicians and technologists, in a manner that is easy to understand and practical for clinical applications.

Nic Butkov, RPSGT is director and key instructor at the school, with over 20 years of clinical and teaching experience in sleep medicine and technology.

For physicians, the school provides essential training in sleep data analysis and sleep study interpretation. Our 3-day Record Review Course is especially useful for physicians preparing for their board exams, as well as for anyone seeking to enhance their skills in scoring and interpreting the polysomnogram.

For technologists, the school offers practical training in laboratory methodology, helping students develop the necessary skills and knowledge for obtaining high quality, artifact-free sleep recordings. All essential aspects of polysomnography are covered in detail during our intensive 5-day Laboratory Methodology Course. This includes sleep stage scoring, event scoring, abnormal record interpretation, instrumentation, electrode application, positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy, multiple sleep latency testing, report generation and effective patient follow-up.

Many physicians also attend our laboratory methodology course, for quality assurance purposes, and to gain a better overall understanding of the sleep recording process.

The best compliment we receive from our students is that our courses make sense. In a time of much confusion over changes in technology, recording techniques and scoring policies, we seek to balance these changes with common sense and sound clinical judgment. Our back-to-basics approach focuses on issues most relevant to obtaining quality sleep recordings - ensuring accurate diagnoses, and positive clinical outcomes for the sleep disorders patient.
